What time do your children go to bed? When your children are frequently on the floor, kicking and crying, it may be because their body lacks sleep. I would like to refer you to a study done by the Attention Behaviour and Sleep Lab at the Douglas Research Centre in Quebec, Canada. It supports the idea that children who have adequate sleep, do better. For 1 week, a bunch of children were either assigned to sleep earlier or later. Teachers were then asked to evaluate their emotions and behavior. Kids that were having more sleep (an average of 27 minutes more) behaved better. They were better at keeping their emotions in check when faced with challenges. Children that lost an average of 54 minutes of sleep due to staying up late, demonstrated more problematic behaviors.

How much sleep is required for children aged 7-12 years old? They should sleep 10 or 11 hours. If you have to readjust your children's bedtime, I suggest you do it. Make sure your children understand that they need to get enough sleep time. If you have a child that likes to be a night owl, be ready for the struggle to instill an earlier bedtime. To make things easier, you should establish a bedtime routine for your children. If you insist they sleep early one day and then allow them to sleep late another day, you are heading for trouble. It must be the same every night. Could it be your children are sleeping late because of computer games, iPad games or television programs? Do something about that then. Maybe in the beginning, you need to train them to sleep early. Soft piano or classical music can help calm their active mind. Get your children to relax on their bed. Have them imagine they are a balloon that inflates as they breath in and deflates as they breath out. As they breath out, tell them to imagine the tension in their body melting away. They have to breath slow. I like to use this imagery to calm my children down. Getting children to comply to your request will not be easy at the start. If you keep at it with patience, they will soon realize that you aren't going to change your mind. You can't expect your children to change their habits instantly.

It may sound a little crazy and you may wonder if 27 minutes will really make a difference in your child's behavior. Why not give it a try? What do you have to lose?
