Currently, thanks to United States law, there are some kinds of phone searches that are legal and open to everyone and some that are completely off limits. You can perform a reverse phone number trace on both land line and cell phones, but you can't perform a forward cell phone search. This law is in place to help put an end to telemarketers who want to call cell phones, but a lot of information can be gathered from reverse searches, so don't give up before you start.
